Young farmer Anne-Catherine Dalcq elected Walloon Minister of Agriculture (Belgium)

Three years ago, we interviewed Anne-Catherine Dalcq for the “women in agriculture” feature in Hectares. A PhD in agro- and biotechnology at the Liège University, the young farmer from Jodoigne was already making a name for herself in the south of Belgium as the VP of the Walloon federation for young farmers (FJA) and representative at the European organisation for young farmers (CEJA). Last year, she was part of the all-female jury at the election of the most inclusive tractor of Agribex, a contest hosted by Women in Ag in collaboration with the tradeshow. Anne-Catherine also played an important role in the farmers protests in Belgium this passed winter.

It is not surprising to us that the conservative-liberal party Mouvement Réformateur (MR) asked her to get involved in politics following the farmers protests. Anne-Catherine, who had always been clear on her ambition to represent the farming community in politics, grabbed this opportunity to influence not only the agriculture legislation, but also get involved in Wallonia’s climate, energy and ecology policy. Anne-Catherine will serve as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs for the coming five years.

Team Women in Ag congratulates Anne-Catherine on her appointment and for showing young women in agriculture the way by following her ambitions.
