Women in Ag 2023-003

Autumn is here and with it a bright, crisp new issue of Women in Ag Magazine!

This issue is taking us to Austria twice, where Antoon met with Angela Stöckl, who runs one of her country’s most innovative dairy farms with compost stables, and Marlene Neuwirth who is completely in her element this season since her farm specialises in pumpkins!

In Sweden, Elisabeth Hidén, Vice President of the European young farmers organisation CEJA and dairy farmer, takes us for a tour on the dairy farm she started with her husband at the beginning of the year and gives us some pointers as to what can be done to move agriculture into the future.

Spain is definitely in our hearts at the Women in Ag redaction after our visit to ICAR Toledo last spring, and so this issue takes you to sunny Spain twice for a talk with vaqueira and influencer Lucia Velasco Rodríguez, who honours the age old tradition of transhumance in the Asturian mountains, and with Ana Saez, COO of a hyper modern indoor vertical farm near Madrid. Talk about contrasts!

In Tanzania, UN Women aims to support the rural women so that they can become independent farmers and contribute to feeding their country. Is empowering women the way to end hunger? For Mariam Ntungu, the support was what she needed to finally start her own chicken and vegetable farm! Read Mariam’s story here.

Always mindful of mental health, this issue contains not one but two articles focusing on this very important topic with our own Erica Leniczek’s column and also an extra article about a Belgian initiative to help support mental health.

“Fair” gives us a little preview of the long expected new edition of Agritechnica after four years of absence and the Women in Ag Awards which will take place there on Wednesday, and our columnist Melanie Epp wonders what it is about farm boards and (the absence of) women.

We end this issue with a super sweet book tip from Antoon to enjoy in front of a roaring fire with your little ones.

We hope you enjoy reading this new issue of Women in Ag Magazine as much as we did making it.

As always, if you have any suggestions or stories to tell us, get in touch here!

Happy reading and, for the people in the northern hemisphere, happy pumpkin season!

Women in Ag 2025-003 is out now!

Happy International Day of Rural Women to all the hard-working women in ag! It is no coincidence that we chose this thirtieth edition of this day, picked by the UN to celebrate and call attention to the achievements of women in agriculture, as the day to launch our latest magazine. There is a lot of […]
